About Us

For context, ASCOlaw began as a Kuala Lumpur-based boutique legal firm founded by our Founder-Managing Partner Anas in 2019. ASCOlaw continues to evolve in terms of width and breadth of expertise as well as expansion of our Clients’ and Stakeholders’ bases. Although ASCOlaw is a relatively young local legal firm, our Clients and Stakeholders are not limited to just Malaysian business owners, public sectors and non-profit organizations. We also handle international businesses and sport regimes matters. ASCOlaw welcomes any queries on any one of our legal services listed here in these pages. Corporate Law

ASCOlaw body of work in Corporate Law includes, but not limited to, Corporate Governance advisory, Commercial Contracts and Transactions, Compliance and Regulations as well as Corporate Disputes and Litigation. We had the good fortune to work with new start-ups as well as more established local brand names.

Sports Law

ASCOlaw practice area in Sports Law is recent but impactful. For context, Sport Law in Malaysia is not well established compared to other practice area such as Corporate Law, although the concept legally is augmented by statutory provisions, most notably is the Sports Development Act 1997 (Act 576).

Criminal Defence

This is a branch of law that focuses on defending individuals or entities accused of committing a crime. Criminal defence lawyers represent defendants at trial and ensure their rights are protected throughout the criminal justice process. The role of criminal defence involves investigating the case, challenging evidence, negotiating plea bargains, and advocating for the accused during trials and appeals. Shariah Law

Shariah law refers to the moral and legal framework derived from Islamic principles, governing the personal, social, and legal aspects of life for Muslims. Shariah, which means “the path” or “the way” in Arabic, is based on religious teachings from the Quran and the Sunnah. In Malaysia the administration of Shariah Law is a separate jurisdiction and varies from one state to the other. ASCOlaw Shariah Counsel is licensed to practice in 4 (four) Malaysian states to date and more jurisdictions are planned in the near future.

Cryptocurrency Law

One of the more exciting legal practice areas to emerge of recent times is the laws regulating cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrency law is complex and rapidly evolving, requiring ongoing updates to stay aligned with technological advancements and market trends. The evolving nature of this field requires adaptation by regulatory authorities around the world to address the unique characteristics of cryptocurrencies, including their decentralized nature, anonymity, and global reach. ASCOlaw current corpus of work includes, not limited to, advisory on Regulations, Compliance, Securities Laws, Privacy and Data Protection among others. Our legal services are extended beyond the Malaysian shore to cryptocurrency companies in Dubai, UAE.

Our Tribe

Muhammad Anas Shafiee

Anas is our Founder and Managing Partner. A qualified Company Secretary and Licensed Shariah Counsel, Anas was admitted to the Malaysian Bar in 2018. He also completed his LLM from the University of Malaya Law Faculty in 2020. That same year, Anas began ASCOlaw after a brief stint at Mu’az Aiman Halim Auzan & Associate since 2018. Building his network through industrial relations at the Firm, Anas was first introduced to the sport industry when he was handling matters for a sport industry related company. Later in 2019, he met with our Partner and Sport Law Consultant, Dr. Wirdati before she was appointed as the Sport Commissioner of Malaysia. Thus began their collaboration in sport-law related matters and soon after Anas’s expertise were then sought by international and national level sport organizations namely the Asian Sepaktakraw Federation (ASTAF), the Malaysian Ice Hockey Federation (MIHF) and the Football Association of Selangor (FAS). 

Additionally, his personal interests in sport and sport law is not limited to the procedural and substantive, as he is also playing futsal for a Kuala Lumpur-based club/s in the spare times between his business meetings. His foresight for the sustainability of ASCOlaw in the future is based on the growth of the sport industry and the acceptance of sports law as a mainstream practice area. Another of his vision on the next big thing is the growth of cryptocurrency as a practice area in the not-so-distant future.

Wirdati Mohd. Radzi, PhD

Dr. Wirdati was called to the Malaysian Bar in 2019, 24 years after graduating IIUM Kulliyyah of Laws. She went on to complete her Masters in Sport Administration, Ohio University USA where she was introduced to Sports Law as a subject in 1998. Upon her return she was responsible in designing and executing the sport law curriculum at the University of Malaya (UM) Sports Centre in 1999. She was an academic staff at UM from that point forth until her secondment to the Ministry of Youth and Sport Malaysia as the Sports Commissioner in 2020. She tool a sabbatical in between her time in UM and the Ministry to complete her pupillage with Messrs. Zahir Khailani. After her time in the Ministry she return to UM before finally opted to resign in 2022. She consults with Anas on sports law and governance initially on a couple of projects before joining ASCOlaw as a Partner in the last quarter of 2024 and is responsible for the development of ASCOlaw Sports Law department.

As an academic she wrote a few articles on sport law and book chapters on other aspects of sports management. She was on advisory capacity to international and national sports organizations such as the Asian Sepaktakraw Federation (ASTAF) and Asian Association for Sport Management (AASM). Currently she is the international sport governance consultant for the Asian Electronic Sports Federation (AESF) as well as several other national and state level sports federations. She was a member of the Women in Sports Law group based in Lausanne, Switzerland from 2019 to 2022.

Abdulah Munzer bin Izer

5 Our Tribe — Abdulah Munzer bin Izer Our Head of Corporate Secretarial Services, Abdullah Munzer bin Izer is a University of Technology MARA graduate, and Chartered Corporate Secretary with close to 10 years of experience in this field.

Abdullah oversaw the incorporation of more than 400 companies in Malaysia owned by both Malaysian and International business owners in a profession spanning 7 years after receiving his Chartered status.

His expertise lends an air of confidence among our Clients and many chose to continue the relationship well beyond the completion of the incorporation process. The Clients trusted ASCOlaw with their corporate governance matters so that they would have a worry-free outlook while navigating their daily business operations. Abdullah maintained a personalized communication with all our Clients while constantly updating them on any changes and/or development in the regulations or the systems under the Companies Commission of Malaysia.
